Listen mode flips the usual study flow: instead of reading a term on screen, you hear it spoken aloud and choose the correct definition from several options. The term stays hidden until you answer, so you practice recognizing words by sound — the same skill you need in conversation, podcasts, and classroom listening.
Open any deck with a term language set and start Listen mode — or encounter listen drills inside Learn, wordlet's mixed study mode. Each card plays automatically (or tap the large play button to replay). Pick the meaning you heard; the term is revealed after you answer. Audio comes from built-in text-to-speech for your deck's language, or from recorded pronunciations you attach to individual cards. Decks without a term language cannot use Listen until you set one in deck settings.
Reading and hearing activate different memory pathways. When you only study from text, you may recognize a word on a page but miss it in speech. Listen mode closes that gap by forcing auditory discrimination: you must connect a sound to a meaning without a spelling crutch. Combined with FSRS scheduling, cards you miss in listen drills return sooner until the sound–meaning link sticks.
Use Listen when you are learning a spoken language, preparing for listening exams, or want to break a reading-only habit. Start with Learn mode for a mix of flip, choice, typing, and listen drills in one session, or run a dedicated Listen round when you want focused ear training. For language decks, follow up with Articles or Stress mode to drill noun articles and Greek stress patterns alongside listening practice.
